If you find a lost dog or cat
Try to contact the owner if the dog is wearing a collar and identification tag. Take the dog to a vet so it can be scanned for a microchip if the dog has no tag or you can't contact the owner. Otherwise, contact our rangers on 02 6023 8111 between 8:30 am - 5:00 pm. After hours contact 1300 133 391 (please note that rangers can not attend after hours call-outs unless the dog is contained and normally will not pick up stray animals between the hours of 7:00 pm and 7:00 am).
- The information on the microchip will help us contact the owner and return the dog to them.
- If the dog doesn't have a microchip or registration, or if the owner can't be contacted, a ranger will take the dog to the Albury Animal Care Centre.
Please note that it is illegal to hold an animal that is not yours on your property for longer than is necessary.
For more information about the identification and registration of companion animals and for the duties and responsibilities of their owners read the NSW Companion Animals Act, 1998.

Stray animals
Vets may accept a stray animal and will then contact us to impound the animal. Please note that vets are not obliged to accept an animal unless it is injured.
Impounded dogs and cats in NSW are kept at the centre for 14 days if they are microchipped and 7 days if they are not. In Victoria all animals (microchipped and non microchipped) are kept for eight (8) days (as per state legislation).
This gives owners a chance to come forward. If the animal is not claimed within these time periods it is then made available for adoption.
For more information about the identification and registration of companion animals and for the duties and responsibilities of their owners read the NSW Companion Animals Act, 1998.
Claim your lost pet
If your animal is microchipped and registered, you will be required to pay an impounding fee and sustenance provided the day before your animal can be released. Please contact us to discuss fees and charges for your Local Government area.
If your animal is not microchipped and registered, this will need to be completed before your animal can be released.
If your dog was seized by our Rangers in a public place, you may be issued with an infringement.
