Albury’s transformation of an industrial-era icon into a vibrant creative hub has earned national recognition, with The Pumphouse shortlisted for the 2025 National Trust (NSW) Heritage Awards in the Architecture category.

Presented annually, the National Trust (NSW) Heritage Awards celebrate excellence in the conservation, protection and celebration of natural, cultural and built heritage across the state. This year’s shortlist highlights a diverse and inspiring array of heritage projects.

Built in 1884 and extended in 1915, The Pumphouse played a pivotal role in Albury’s early infrastructure, supplying water and later electricity to the region until 1926. Its robust industrial character - an exemplar of late 19th century architecture - has been thoughtfully preserved in its modern reincarnation.

Following a visionary restoration in 2024, the building was reborn as The Pumphouse - a dynamic Maker Space facility designed to support artists, craftspeople and innovators by providing access to essential tools, resources and community networks.

“Housed in a piece of our city’s living history, The Pumphouse blends heritage with innovation,” said Albury Mayor Kevin Mack.
“It’s a shining example of how we can honour our past while empowering our creative future. This nomination is a testament to the vision, collaboration and passion that brought the space to life.”

With a mission to become a nationally recognised centre for creative excellence, The Pumphouse continues to inspire a new generation of makers, artists and thinkers - all within the walls of one of Albury’s landmarks.

The Heritage Awards are a signature event of the Australian Heritage Festival, coordinated by the National Trust (NSW) with support from the NSW Government through Heritage NSW.

The 2025 National Trust (NSW) Heritage Awards category winners will be announced at a ceremony on Friday 16 May at Doltone House, Pyrmont.

The Pumphouse is located at 9 Boundary Road, Albury, just 70m from the Murray River.
