A bold blend of heritage and creativity has earned Albury’s Pumphouse national acclaim, with the project receiving a Highly Commended honour at the prestigious 2025 National Trust (NSW) Heritage Awards.
Celebrated for its transformation from an industrial-era utility into a vibrant creative hub, The Pumphouse was shortlisted in the Architecture category, standing proudly alongside some of the state’s most remarkable heritage projects.
The National Trust (NSW) Heritage Awards recognise excellence in the conservation, protection and celebration of NSW’s rich natural, cultural and built heritage. The category’s top honour went to a heritage-listed row of former workers’ dwellings in Sydney’s Dawes Point, which were expertly reimagined into 27 unique apartments which blend contemporary living with heritage charm.
The Pumphouse joined a standout field, with other highly commended projects including the Rosebery Engine Yards, a Potts Point housing project, and an historic bookstore in Glebe.
“This recognition affirms our commitment to preserving Albury’s heritage while championing innovation and creativity for future generations,” said Albury Mayor Kevin Mack.
The Pumphouse Coordinator, Susan Reid, said the honour was a proud moment for everyone involved.
“To see The Pumphouse recognised at this level is incredibly rewarding,” Ms Reid said.
“This space has become a beacon for makers, artists and dreamers - all inspired by the unique character of this historic building.”
Built in 1884 and expanded in 1915, The Pumphouse once powered Albury’s early growth, providing water and electricity to the region until 1926. Its solid brickwork and distinctive industrial character - hallmarks of late 19th-century architecture - have been carefully preserved in its modern rebirth.
Reopened in 2024, The Pumphouse is now a thriving Maker Space - a centre for innovation, collaboration and artistic expression. Designed to support artists, craftspeople and creators, it offers state-of-the-art tools, shared resources, and a vibrant community.
With a vision to become a nationally recognised hub for creative excellence, The Pumphouse is inspiring a new generation of makers, all within the walls of one of Albury’s most iconic buildings.
The Heritage Awards are a key feature of the Australian Heritage Festival, coordinated by the National Trust (NSW) and supported by the NSW Government through Heritage NSW.
