Crossing works completed

Tuesday 29 September 2020
Pedestrians now have right of way at the new zebra crossing in Swift Street, following the installation of a lighting system this week.

Until now, pedestrians were required to give way to vehicles at the raised crossing, which links the Wilson Street car park and QEII Square.

However, the installation of the lights and new line marking on the road surface has allowed the crossing to be designated as ‘pedestrian priority’.

While vehicles are now required to stop to allow people on foot to cross, drivers and walkers are urged to take care at all crossings to minimise the risk of accidents.

Raised crossings are located in places of high pedestrian activity to increase visibility of walkers and encouraging traffic to slow down.

Thank you to all users of the crossing who’ve abided by the give way rules during the construction phase.

The completion of the Swift Street crossing provides full connectivity between the car park and the QEII cultural precinct, allowing more people to safely access QEII Square and CBD businesses.

AlburyCity is now updating the line markings on all of the city’s pedestrian crossings to improve safety for the community.
