Main Sewer Pump Station and Rising Mains

This complex project aims to upgrade the pumping capacity at the Main Sewer Pump Station (MSPS) site, whilst simultaneously continuing to service the infrastructure needs of our growing city.

About this Project

AlburyCity’s Main Sewer Pump Station collects and pumps away around 95% of all sewer flows within the city. It was originally constructed in 1916 and can be seen as the historic building which forms part of Council’s main works depot, in the heart of our city, on the corner of Smollet Street and Wodonga Place.

The Main Sewer Pump Station (MSPS) is now approaching its design capacity, and this is a situation that has been made worse by the city’s unprecedented development and continuing population growth in places like Thurgoona. As most of the city’s underground sewer pipes eventually convey flow to this pump station, we are unable to remove it from service.

Accordingly, the MSPS requires a significant upgrade to ensure that it’s able to meet AlburyCity’s future needs.

This complex project aims to upgrade the pumping capacity at the MSPS site, whilst simultaneously continuing to service the infrastructure needs of our growing city. The project aims to integrate with a possible redevelopment of the AlburyCity Wodonga Depot site, as defined within the AlburyCity Murray River Experience (MRE) Masterplan and it will:

  • Deliver an overall combined sewer pumping capacity of up to 3000 litres/second - that’s an Olympic-sized swimming pool every 8 minutes!
  • See the construction of a new sewer pump station and rehabilitation of the existing, historic MSPS at its current location
  • Upgrade existing, and construct new, sewer pipelines from the MSPS to the city’s wastewater treatment plants.

Next Steps

The Main Sewer Pump Station and Rising Main project is strategically important to support the city’s continued growth. We will soon be looking to engage suitably qualified consultants to assist us in completing preliminary design works, approvals and construction phase services for the required work.

This major project is fully funded within Council’s long term financial plan and is expected to support the city for the next 100 years.
