Crossing Place traces the settlement of Albury by land and water. An engaging collection of objects, audio and film tell the story of Albury from first contact with the Wiradjuri people to the city we know today.
Crossing Place takes you on a journey of Albury’s growth from the river crossing point explored by Hume and Hovell into a thriving city with federal ambitions and an important role in capital city decentralisation. Weaving together items from the railway, hospital, shops, cinemas, services, sporting clubs and schools, it creates a history of urban ambition.
Integral to the story is the Murray River. Children can explore the kids-only river installation featuring river artefacts, animals, sounds and smells.
Learn about the construction of the iconic Hume Dam and why it was a wonder of its time. Watch the story of the emergency landing of the DC2 Uiver aeroplane in Albury during the historic race from London to Melbourne. See the actual pyjama girl death mask and decide if you believe the police reports.
Unique sporting memorabilia such as Margaret Court’s Wimbledon tennis racket and Jack Crawford’s Australian Open trophy are currently on display. Lauren Jackson’s Olympic medals from every Commonwealth games are exhibited beside her Australian Olympic uniform and basketball trainers.
Albury Wodonga has always been a crossing place: a place of state borders and different rail gauges, a place of trade, a place of new beginnings for the influx of migrants who passed through the Bonegilla Migrant Reception Centre and, of course, a meeting point.
Crossing Place is the starting point for many of the education programs offered by the LibraryMuseum. There is an education resource for school teachers; audio tours are available; and guided tours can be arranged for members of the public.
