Find out how to identify, report and manage weeds and understand your biosecurity responsibilities.
Weeds can harm native vegetation, waterways, agriculture and public spaces. Everyone who owns, occupies or manages land has a responsibility to prevent, eliminate or minimise weed-related biosecurity risks.
AlburyCity works with landholders and government agencies to identify priority weeds, manage infestations and reduce their spread.
Your biosecurity responsibilities
Under the Biosecurity Act 2015, everyone who owns, occupies or manages land has a General Biosecurity Duty.
This means you must take reasonably practicable steps to prevent, eliminate or minimise the risks posed by weeds on your land.
Some weeds must be reported or managed in particular ways. Requirements depend on the species and location, so check NSW WeedWise for current obligations.
Prevent weeds from spreading
You can reduce the spread of weeds by:
- learning to recognise weeds on your property
- managing weeds before they flower or produce seed
- disposing of weed material correctly
- not dumping garden waste in bushland or on roadsides
- cleaning soil and plant material from vehicles, machinery and equipment
- checking plants before buying, selling or sharing them
- using locally appropriate plants in your garden
- reporting unfamiliar or priority weeds
- working with neighbouring landholders where infestations cross property boundaries.
Identify and report a weed
Correct identification helps determine whether a plant must be reported and how it should be managed.
Search NSW WeedWise using a common or scientific name, or use WeedScan to identify a plant from photographs.
How AlburyCity manages weeds
AlburyCity is the Local Control Authority for weeds within the Albury local government area.

- find a suspected priority weed
- need help identifying a weed
- are concerned about weeds on Council land
- believe weeds are spreading from another property.
Provide the location, photographs and any information that may help identify the plant.
