Which applies to your property?
Council manages the sewer network and wastewater treatment services for properties connected to the reticulated sewer system.
Properties outside the Council sewer network may use a septic tank, aerated wastewater treatment system or another approved on-site sewage management system.
Property owners are responsible for operating and maintaining these systems safely and must hold the required Council approvals.
Businesses must obtain Council approval before discharging liquid trade waste into the sewerage system. This includes wastewater containing substances such as oil, grease or chemicals.
How Council manages wastewater
AlburyCity operates three wastewater systems serving urban Albury, Hume Weir Village and Lara Lakes at Table Top. The systems collect, treat and manage wastewater to protect public health and the environment.
The urban system includes:
- the Kremur Street and Waterview wastewater treatment plants
- major and minor pumping stations
- more than 550 kilometres of sewer mains
- sewer access maintenance holes and vent pipes.
Wastewater travels through the sewer network and pumping stations before reaching one of the treatment plants.
Kremur Street Wastewater Treatment Plant
The Kremur Street plant is a biological nutrient removal facility. Treated wastewater passes through maturation ponds at Horseshoe Lagoon before being transferred to the Waterview system.
Waterview Wastewater Treatment Plant
The Waterview plant provides biological nutrient removal, sand filtration and disinfection. Treated wastewater from both urban plants forms part of Council’s reclaimed-water system and is reused at locations including Wonga Wetlands, plantations and irrigated pastures.
This system services properties and facilities around Hume Weir Village. Wastewater is treated through an activated sludge process, followed by maturation ponds and controlled discharge.
The Lara Lakes system services approximately 35 residences around Lara Lakes at Table Top. Wastewater is treated through lagoon systems, with treated water used to irrigate adjoining woodlots.
These descriptions reflect the existing Council wastewater information, although plant capacities and infrastructure figures should be confirmed by the operational team before publication.
Wastewater monitoring
Council regularly samples and tests wastewater to monitor treatment performance and protect public health and the environment.
Wastewater treatment plants are operated in accordance with applicable NSW Environment Protection Authority licence conditions. Council also reports on the performance of its wastewater services through the requirements applying to NSW local water utilities.
Managing an on-site sewage system
On-site sewage management systems treat wastewater within a property where Council sewer services are unavailable.
