If your business discharges wastewater containing fats, oils, grease, chemicals or other contaminants into Council’s sewer, you may need liquid trade waste approval.

You must obtain approval before discharging liquid trade waste into Council’s sewer.
1. Check whether approval is required
Contact Council if you are unsure whether your wastewater is liquid trade waste or what treatment equipment may be required.
2. Prepare your documents
Complete the AlburyCity liquid trade waste application form and prepare any required plans, drawings and supporting information.
3. Lodge your application
Upload the completed form and supporting documents through the NSW Planning Portal.
4. Council will assess
Council will assess and categorise your application. Some applications may also require concurrence from the relevant NSW regulator. We will advise you of the outcome and any approval conditions in writing.
Please note: It is important to note that this process may occasionally take several weeks to complete.
What is liquid trade waste?
Liquid trade waste is wastewater produced by a business, commercial or industrial activity and discharged into Council’s sewer. It does not include ordinary domestic sewage from toilets, showers, baths or hand basins.
- food and hospitality businesses
- automotive and mechanical businesses
- industrial and manufacturing premises
- health, education and community facilities
- swimming pools and commercial laundries
- septic tank, caravan or portable toilet waste
Why approval is required
Trade wastewater can damage sewer infrastructure, disrupt treatment processes, create health and safety risks and reduce opportunities to reuse treated water and biosolids.
Discharging liquid trade waste into Council’s sewer without approval is an offence. You must receive written approval before starting or changing the discharge.
After approval
Your approval may include requirements for pre-treatment equipment, monitoring, maintenance, sampling, discharge limits and charges. Contact Council before changing your business activities or wastewater discharge.
