Why is roadside vegetation important?

Roadside vegetation provides habitat for native plants and animals and connects otherwise isolated areas of bushland. These remnants are increasingly important as development, weeds and other disturbances place pressure on native vegetation across the region.

Box Gum Grassy Woodland

Albury contains remnants of White Box–Yellow Box–Blakely’s Red Gum Grassy Woodland and Derived Native Grassland, commonly known as Box Gum Grassy Woodland.

Once widespread across south-eastern Australia, it has been extensively cleared and is now listed as a critically endangered ecological community. Roadside remnants provide important habitat and help connect otherwise isolated areas of native vegetation.

These remnants can be damaged by mowing, clearing native vegetation, removing dead wood, collecting firewood and introducing weeds.

Significant roadside environment areas

Significant Roadside Environment Area signs identify roadsides with important conservation values. These may include native vegetation, wildlife habitat, Aboriginal cultural heritage, geological features or historic sites.

Do not mow, clear vegetation, collect firewood, undertake maintenance or carry out other work within a signed area without approval from AlburyCity.

Help protect roadside vegetation

You can help protect significant roadside vegetation by:

• not mowing, clearing or “tidying up” native vegetation within the road reserve
• leaving fallen timber, dead trees and natural groundcover in place
• preventing garden plants and weeds from spreading into roadside vegetation
• planting locally native species on your property near roadside remnants
• reporting illegal clearing, firewood collection, rubbish dumping or other damage
