Cigarette butt litter

Dispose of cigarette butts safely and help keep Albury’s streets, parks and waterways clean.

Dispose of cigarette butts safely

Fully extinguish cigarette butts and place them in a designated cigarette bin. If one is not available, retain the extinguished butt until you can dispose of it in a general waste bin.

Never drop cigarette butts on streets, footpaths, in gutters or in the natural environment.

Why cigarette butt litter is harmful

Cigarette butts are the most commonly littered item in NSW. An estimated 1.32 billion cigarette butts are littered across the state each year.

Cigarette filters contain cellulose acetate, a form of plastic that does not readily biodegrade. Littered butts can be carried through stormwater drains into local creeks, rivers and other waterways, where they release plastic fibres and harmful chemicals.

What AlburyCity is doing

AlburyCity provides cigarette-butt bins and supporting signage in selected public areas and continues to promote responsible disposal.
