Council adopts Heritage Review to guide future planning and protection
AlburyCity has adopted its Heritage Review, providing a contemporary framework to help recognise, manage and protect places of local heritage significance while ensuring further opportunities for community input before any changes are progressed.
The Heritage Review includes a new Heritage Strategy 2025–2035 and recommendations to update heritage listings in the Albury Local Environmental Plan (LEP) 2010 and review heritage controls in the Albury Development Control Plan (DCP) 2010.
Mayor Kevin Mack said the review was an important step in ensuring Albury's heritage continues to be recognised and managed in line with community expectations.
"Our heritage tells the story of who we are as a community. This review provides an updated framework to help protect places of local significance while supporting the city's future growth," Mayor Mack said.
"The review has been informed by extensive technical work and community consultation over recent years, with feedback helping shape the final recommendations adopted by Council."
Council received 99 submissions during the public exhibition period, with feedback resulting in a number of refinements to the final Heritage Review.
Following consideration of community feedback, Council resolved not to progress the proposed heritage listing of the Holy Spirit Church in Lavington or St John's Hill Estate as part of the next stage of the process.
"Adopting the Heritage Review provides the strategic direction to amend heritage listings and planning controls. Importantly, the LEP and DCP amendment processes include further public exhibition and consideration by Council before being finalised,” the Mayor added.
The Heritage Review was undertaken in accordance with NSW Local Government Heritage Guidelines and supported by a community heritage grant from the NSW Office of Environment & Heritage (OE&H).
The adopted Heritage Strategy 2025–2035 will guide Council's approach to heritage management over the next decade and help ensure our built, cultural and Aboriginal heritage is appropriately recognised, protected and managed for future generations.
