The Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Ugly Animals Review
Written and illustrated by Sami Bayly
Recommended for ages 7+ years
A terrific encyclopaedia which explores 60 animals that are considered to be the ugliest animals in the world. Through this project Sami wants to show that ugly can also be beautiful. It’s important to note that Sami Bayly is a natural history illustrator, and her illustrations in this book are just as important as the text.
Though these creatures may be ugly, they are fascinating! Each animal has been dedicated a double spread, with one page being Sami’s illustration, and the other the informative text. For each animal, Sami has divided the page of text into the following headings: description, conservation status, diet, location/habitat, and fun facts. For some creatures an extra heading has been included: Close Relations, which tells us that they are closely related to another animal.
Sami is based in Newcastle and she loves all things weird and wonderful. She finds the beauty in all animals regardless of their appearance and wants to share her appreciation with others.
This is her first book, and all the illustrations were painted with watercolour and white gouache paint.
