History and Heritage
Explorers Hume and Hovell first passed through the Albury region in 1824, paving the way for stockmen, settlers and travellers to follow.
Albury was then founded to secure the route from Sydney in New South Wales to Port Phillip in Victoria, and to settle inland districts.
Following the founding of Albury by Robert Brown, the Murray River at Albury-Wodonga became the natural crossing place and Albury was transformed into a vital river port when paddlesteamers worked the river.
It also developed into a major railway town, and many of the buildings in central Albury owe their existence to the time when Albury became the heart of the region.
