AlburyCity has welcomed a $1.2M Federal Government grant to encourage Sydneysiders to move to Albury and other major regional cities in NSW.The grant will fund a project called Evocities, proposed by Albury, Armidale, Bathurst, Dubbo, Orange, Tamworth and Wagga Wagga.
Evocities will promote the advantages of living, working and investing in these inland cities to Sydneysiders.
The grant was announced on Mnday 13 July by Parliamentary Secretary for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Maxine McKew.
"We want to ensure that regional centres thrive," Ms McKew said.
"To ensure the road to Sydney isn't all one-way traffic, city people need to know more about the many benefits a regional lifestyle has to offer."
The 'Evo' in the Evocities branding is short for "energy, vision and opportunity".
AlburyCity Director of Planning and Economic Development, Michael Keys, said the Evocities campaign had potential to help Albury boost its population and economy.
"This is a fantastic opportunity for Albury to be promoted for its lifestyle and employment options," Mr Keys said.
"Given that we have a relatively healthy, dynamic and sustainable local economy, we are well placed to attract new people with a range of skills."
The Evocities project is funded under the Rudd Government's Better Regions Program which is delivering $176 million worth of much-needed community facilities and services over four years.
The Evocities campaign is expected to begin in October 2009.
