Energy Efficient Homes

AlburyCity is concerned that eligible residents might be missing out on free insulation or a rebate on a solar hot-water system.

Council is working to promote the Federal Government's Energy Efficient Homes Package, as it is creating local jobs and reducing Albury's carbon footprint.

The program, which is open to anyone living with limited or no ceiling insulation, pays up to $1600 in insulation costs for owners and occupiers and $1000 for landlords and tenants.

It also pays $1600 towards the costs of installing a solar hot water system.

Until now, applicants have had to pay for insulation or a hot water system up-front, and then wait to have their money reimbursed. From tomorrow however, registered insulation providers will bill the government direct, so eligible applicants won't have to pay a cent.

AlburyCity's Economic Development Team Leader, Tracey Squire, says the program has created about eight jobs in Albury, since its first phase started in February.

She hopes local uptake will increase now that costs don't have to be paid up-front.

"Feedback from local insulation providers suggests that this program could generate a further 20 local jobs," Ms Squire says.

"We need to make sure that local people know about the program and take advantage of it. It's a great opportunity to create local jobs in the current economic climate, while also giving local residents a chance to save on their heating and cooling costs."

People wishing to take advantage of the scheme can call the Federal Government's hotline - 1800 808 571, or call AlburyCity for further information on 6023 8214.
