Youth Council nominations

Members of AlburyCity's Youth Council are encouraging their peers to nominate for positions on the next Youth Council.

To be eligible, applicants need to be aged 14-17 and living, working or attending school, TAFE or university within the Albury Local Government Area.

Youth Councillor and James Fallon High School student, Rachele Armstrong, says representing other young people in the community is rewarding.

"Kids at my school now have a voice as well," Rachele, 15, says.

"I'm a lot more confident about speaking out about what I want to say and I know my opinion counts."

She has particularly enjoyed running events and learning about work that goes on behind the scenes.

Kate Millward, 15, from The Scots School Albury, says being a Youth Councillor offers a great opportunity to contribute to the community.

"It's fun, I feel like I can give something back and I've gained a better connection with kids in Albury who I wouldn't normally see outside of school," she says.

The Youth Council shares the same structure as AlburyCity, with nine Youth Councillors, a Youth Mayor and a Deputy Mayor. Youth Councillors hold their positions for 12 months.

The new Youth Council's role will be to address issues identified at the April Youth Forum, including safety and entertainment, and give young people a voice within the community. They will be consulted by a range of organisations on issues affecting youth and work on specific projects designed by young people, for young people.

Nominations close on Friday 17 July and the new Youth Council will start work on Thursday 30 July.

Nomination forms are available from AlburyCity's Customer Service Centre.
