Writers Given a Reason to Celebrate - Short Story Competition

With dual celebrations of the 100th birthday of the original Town Hall, now the Art Gallery, and the first birthday of the LibraryMuseum, AlburyCity is calling for regional writers to be inspired and enter its annual short story competition with the theme, A reason to celebrate.

AlburyCity Collections Co-ordinator, Bridget Guthrie, said the theme gave writers great scope.

“While we’re celebrating two wonderful facilities in our city, the theme gives the opportunity to write about any reason for celebration,” Ms Guthrie said.

“It also celebrates the many relationships we have including the Friends of the LibraryMuseum who are once again sponsoring the Children’s section,” she said.

Ms Guthrie said AlburyCity was delighted to have regional authors judging the competition.

“Children’s author and illustrator, Gordon Reece, will judge the children’s section, while authors, John Charalambous and Robyne Young will judge the open section,” Ms Guthrie said.

“Between them they have many years of writing and illustrating experience, and last year John had his novel, “Silent Parts” longlisted for the Miles Franklin Award.

“The experience of our judges demonstrates the depth of talent we have in the region, which we are further developing through the Write Around the Murray festival to be held from Sunday 27 July to Sunday 3 August.

Ms Guthrie said the festival would again celebrate the written word through keynote events, workshops and activities to engage targeted groups including youth, people of non-English speaking background, older people, high school students with advanced writing skills and professional and aspiring writers.

“We’re very excited to have David Stratton from ‘At the Movies’ to open the festival and Jacqueline Pascarl, author of ‘Once I was a Princess’ to close, and a wonderful array of presenters during the eight days of the festival,” Ms Guthrie said.
