New grants for local athletes
AlburyCity will introduce a new sports grant program to support local athletes who represent at a state level or higher.
Council has voted to allocate $5000 from the Sports Albury Grant Program to help Albury athletes cover the cost of travel and competition.
The new Individual Athlete Grant Program will provide $200 grants to athletes of any age representing at a state level and $400 to represent at a national level.
Applications will open on 1 July. More information will be be available on our website then.
The program will have a two-year trial and there are no age restrictions.
Mayor Henk van de Ven, who is also chair of the Sports Albury Advisory Committee, said this would provide a much-needed boost to local athletes.
"Albury is a sporting city and it's important that we support our athletes when they are competing at a high level," Cr van de Ven said.
"Athletes and their families make a lot of sacrifices in their efforts to compete and we want to try to support them in a more co-ordinated way.
"This will be in addition to our existing support for the Southern Sports Academy, which is a $200 grant for athletes selected in the Academy."
Cr van de Ven said Council received about 15 requests for support from athletes a year through different avenues and the Individual Athlete Grant Program would be another avenue of possible funding.
