Hear Australian Chamber Orchestra

24 August 2016

One of Finland's most successful string quartets will direct the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s acclaimed 17-piece string ensemble to perform Beethoven & Mendelssohn in Albury next month.

The Finnish quartet, Meta4, will direct the ACO Collective to perform Beethoven & Mendelssohn at Albury Entertainment Centre on Friday 2 September at 7.30pm.

The ACO Collective is the orchestra's renowned string ensemble, which travels Australia to perform and deliver education programs.

ACO Collective’s Artistic Director is acclaimed Finnish violinist Pekka Kuusisto and he invited Meta4 to join the orchestra on tour.

The Beethoven & Mendelssohn program features works by Webern, Jaakko Kuusisto, Mendelssohn, Sculthorpe and Beethoven's last complete work, String Quartet in F major, Op.135.

The performance will allow music lovers the unique experience of a quartet rather than an individual leading the ACO Collective.

Meta4 viola player Antti Tikkanen said: “There are huge advantages with directing as a quartet, compared to one violinist directing. Our ‘four-headed-monster’ can take care of various instrument groups and aspects simultaneously; we can cover all functions of the score. The chamber music feeling and quality of the process and performance is something most musicians have been excited about.”
