Albury Regional Art Gallery Committee appointed
AlburyCity has appointed eight members to the newly created Albury Regional Art Gallery Advisory Committee.
Art heavyweights from the National Gallery of Australia and Art Gallery of New South Wales will join local representatives from the arts and business communities.
Committee members will play a strategic leadership role in helping the Art Gallery become the region's cultural icon. They will provide expertise to support the Albury Regional Art Gallery and Cultural Services staff, particularly in the areas of commercial acumen, entrepreneurial leadership, innovation, marketing and PR, philanthropy, strategy and stakeholder engagement.
The Committee features Mary-Lou Nugent from the National Gallery of Australia. Local art and business champions John Skillington, Jacinta Mirams, Maree Cables and former Council GM Les Tomich will also join the Committee. A representative from the Art Gallery of New South Wales will also be appointed in coming weeks.
"The future art gallery is in very good hands with these appointments," AlburyCity Mayor Kevin Mack said. "They bring an incredible amount of experience and passion to the project. They've all worked in the art and business sectora for a long time and collectively they want to deliver the best possible facility for Albury and I'm sure they will achieve it."
"The Albury Regional Art Gallery is going to be one of the region's great assets. Under the guidance of this committee we will be able to attract the exhibitions and artists that will make the new gallery a tourism and cultural icon."
Each member will serve on the committee for two years, with the option of extension in June 2016. Cr Graham Docksey will be the Councillor delegate with Cr David Thurley the alternate representative.
Construction of the Art Gallery is underway and is scheduled for opening in June 2015.
John is currently Head Teacher of the Art School at James Fallon High School, North Albury with 32 years experience in arts education and as a practising artist.
Tony has been involved with the Albury Regional Art Gallery since its inception at its present site, firstly as Chairman of the then Board of Trustees and the founding Chairman of the Albury Wodonga Regional Arts Foundation. Tony continues in this position and is a prominent businessman.
Jacinta is President of the Friends of the Albury Regional Gallery, a museum professional and has an extensive experience and love of the arts.
Dr Guinever Threlkeld
Dr Threlkeld is Head of Campus, La Trobe University Albury-Wodonga.
Les Tomich OAM
As a previous General Manager of AlburyCity Les has a passion for Albury, a deep understanding of local government and its function and has been a consistent champion of the art gallery and the cultural precinct development.
Mary is the Head of Travelling Exhibitions at the National Gallery of Australia, and originally from Albury.
Maree is a prominent businesswoman and fundraiser, and is currently Chair of Arts Albury, a volunteer philanthropy group aiming to raise $1.1M for the gallery redevelopment.
