23 September 2013

Cr Kevin Mack has been elected Mayor of Albury for 2013-14. Cr Henk van de Ven will serve as Deputy Mayor.

Cr Mack was elected with five votes from Albury’s nine Councillors. It will be Cr Mack’s first term as Mayor.

A subsequent vote saw Cr van de Ven elected as Deputy.

Mayor Mack said ongoing financial responsibility and delivering major projects would be the focus of his Mayoral term.

“It’s a huge honour to be elected Mayor of Albury,” Mayor Mack said. “This is a great city and I’m very excited about the opportunities ahead.”

“We’ve got a strong Council and a well led organisation and I’m confident we will achieve some great things for Albury.”

Construction on the Albury art gallery will begin in Mayor Mack’s term, and said it would become one of the region’s best cultural assets.

“We’re all really looking forward to the Art Gallery getting underway. Final designs are due in the next few months and it’s a project that will be a great attraction for the city.”

Mayor Mack said that he would help continue AlburyCity’s commitment to financial responsibility.

“This year we will reduce the deficit in our General Fund by $2.5M and will see a $329,000 surplus across all funds. We’ve made some terrific progress over the past 12 months and I’d like to see that continue.”

Mayor Mack also paid tribute to his predecessor, Cr Alice Glachan, and thanked his fellow Councillors.

“Alice has been a terrific Mayor for this city and a great leader for many years. Having served as her Deputy I know she’s set a great example and I hope to reach a similar standard.”

“I’d also like to thank my Council colleagues for their support. It’s a great privilege to lead this great team and I’m looking forward to working alongside them in the coming 12 months.”
