Council bids for 2015 Asian Cup hosting duties
Albury could host an international soccer team ahead of the 2015 Asian Cup if a submission to the Asian Football Confederation is successful.
Council made its submission this week and is one of 23 Australian cities offering to host one of the 16 teams who will compete in the 2015 Asian Cup.
AlburyCity Mayor Cr Kevin Mack said:
"Council is offering to host an international team for the 2015 AFC Asian Cup. Overall, 16 teams will be competing and Albury will make a strong case for hosting a Pre Competition Camp."
"The proposal focuses on the Lavington Sports Ground and the facilities it can offer to a visiting team. Council also highlighted the city’s extensive accommodation and transport options which will be perfect for players and officials. We believe that our geographic location will also be a strength, particularly the Albury Airport offering flights directly to Sydney and Melbourne. "
"It’s a very exciting prospect and we’ll be working closely with the Albury Wodonga Football Association to develop the proposal."
Council expects to hear in 2014 if it has been successful. If successful the visiting team would be expected to stay in Albury for 2 - 3 weeks and would contribute $250,000 to the local economy.
