Community says upgrade Wagga Road first

18 September 2013

Lavington businesses and residents have told Council they want the upgrade and beautification of Wagga Road to take priority over Griffith Road.

The results of community consultation on the Lavington CBD upgrade will be tabled at Monday Night’s Engineering and Works Committee.

Council sought public input on the priorities for Lavington after being approached by the Albury Northside Chamber of Commerce and some residents, who said the revitalisation of Wagga Road had become a higher priority for the local community.

Beautification of Griffith Road was planned for 2012-2013 as part of the Lavington CBD Master Plan priorities.  However the Chamber requested that the $600K funding for Griffith Road, secured under the Special Variation to Rates, be re-allocated to Wagga Road, citing a downturn in economic conditions, lack of appeal and aesthetics of the Wagga Road streetscape and a lack of identity for the broader Lavington CBD.

To meet the requirements of the SVR program consultation with the broader Lavington community was undertaken during July. It included an online survey on its website ‘Have A Say’ page, the distribution of flyers to Lavington businesses and property owners, local media coverage and advertising as well as two community workshops.

Council received 111 survey responses, 50 people attended the workshops and there were four written submissions. As a result, 83% of respondents nominated Wagga Road as their priority with 17% saying they wanted Griffith Road upgraded first. 87% of respondents were supportive of Council re-allocating the $600K for Griffith Road to Wagga Road.

AlburyCity Team Leader Traffic and Transport, Steve Swann says supporters of Wagga Road felt it should be prioritised because of its high traffic volume, greater number of businesses and prominence and that Griffith Road had already had some upgrades.

He said the community also wants Council to consider improving the intersection of Griffith and Urana Roads and providing additional pedestrian facilities in Griffith Road.

He says the report to be tabled Monday Night, recommends re-allocating the SVR funding; that detailed designs and cost estimates for Wagga Road be undertaken and for Council to also complete the designs and cost estimates for Griffith Road and other identified works for inclusion in future delivery programs.
