Basketball Coup for Albury

27 June 2013

Albury has landed a major sporting coup with news the city will host the 2014 Australian U/14 Boys Basketball Championships.

The news comes after Council prepared a joint submission with the Albury Basketball Association in a bid to attract the event to the city.

The tournament will be held from 29 September to 4 October 2014 and is a major boost for local sport according to AlburyCity’s Team Leader Leisure Facilities, Michael Stanton.

“The Lauren Jackson Sports Centre is recognised as one of the best facilities for large sporting carnivals. This event will be a great showcase for the centre, but also the city of Albury,” he said.

“We really appreciate the support of the Albury Basketball Association which partnered with us on this project and was instrumental in delivering this great result.”

The championships are contested annually in cities around Australia. It will be the first time Albury has hosted the event which will be contested by 24 teams and attract up to 1000 visitors to the city.

“We work really hard to attract major sporting events to Albury and this certainly adds to the fantastic sporting fixture we have here.”

Albury is already the annual host of the Country Cup Basketball tournament, one of the largest events on Council’s sporting calendar.
