Gas Management System
Methane gas generated from the Albury Waste Management Centre is now powering up to 1500 Albury homes.
A 1.1 megawatt renewable energy facility was installed in 2014 to remove methane gas from the landfill and convert it to electricity.
Landfill gas consists of approximately 50% methane, a harmful greenhouse gas. The plant generates electricity 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The facility generates in excess of 9,000 megawatt hours of energy on average each year, powering approximately 1500 homes.
The combustion of landfill gas from the AWMC will significantly reduce carbon emissions, estimated at 46,800 tonnes per year. The facility continues to provide dual benefits of pollution and odour reduction and renewable energy for the next 20 years.
